The sour is the single most productive template in cocktails. Spirit, citrus and something sweet, shaken with ice. Two parts to one to one is the classic ratio and adjusting it is how you make the drink yours.
Swap the spirit and it changes name without changing shape. Gin and lime is a Gimlet, rum and lime is a Daiquiri, tequila with orange liqueur is a Margarita, whiskey with lemon is a Whiskey Sour. One formula, four famous drinks.
Fresh citrus is not optional here. Bottled juice is pasteurised, so the aromatic oils are gone and you are left with acidity and no smell, which is exactly what a sour cannot afford.
