Before the Martini went dry it was made with sweet vermouth, and the drinks in that older lineage are richer, softer and easier to like than their descendants. The Martinez is the bridge: gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino and bitters, and you can taste the Manhattan in it.
The pair also anchors the Negroni family. Gin and sweet vermouth plus Campari in equal thirds is a Negroni; drop the Campari and lengthen it and you are in Sweet Martini territory.
Use a good vermouth here and keep it cold. In a drink this short it is a third of what you are tasting, not a rinse.
