Vodka and cream is the base of the after-dinner drink, and it works for the same reason vodka works anywhere: it adds strength and nothing else, so whatever flavour you add is the whole drink.
In practice that flavour is almost always coffee or chocolate. A White Russian is vodka, coffee liqueur and cream, and a Mudslide is the same drink with Irish cream added and any restraint removed.
Half and half instead of double cream makes all of these lighter and easier to finish, and it is what most bars actually pour.
