Tequila is sharp, vegetal and a little peppery, and it wants acid and length rather than sweetness. That is why nearly every tequila classic is citrus plus something long: a Margarita is lime and orange liqueur, a Paloma is grapefruit soda, a Ranch Water is lime and mineral water and nothing else.
Buy blanco. It is unaged, so the agave is undisguised, and it is what the recipes were written for. Reposado has spent months in oak and reads rounder and softer, which is pleasant to sip and quietly wrong in a Margarita.
Check the label for 100% agave. A mixto is legally allowed to be half other sugars, and it is where tequila's hangover reputation comes from.
