New Orleans in a glass: rye and cognac split the base, sweet vermouth rounds them out, and a barspoon of Benedictine adds honeyed herbs that tie the two spirits together. Peychaud's bitters bring the anise note the city runs on. Stirred and served with an orange zest and a cherry, it is rich, boozy and slow. Created at the Hotel Monteleone's carousel bar in 1938.
