Real Sazerac

A bold, spirit-forward rye cocktail with a light sweetness and bright citrus oil, balanced by Peychaud's bitters and a pronounced anise/Herbsaint aroma from the rinse. It appears deep amber over ice with a glossy lemon-twisted top. Worth trying if you appreciate classic, aromatic whiskey cocktails with a clean, boozy finish.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp Granulated Sugar
  • 1 tsp Water
  • 3 dashes Peychaud's® Bitters
  • 2 oz Sazerac® Rye Whiskey
  • Fill Herbsaint® Liqueur

Instructions

  1. Take two Old-Fashioned glasses and fill one with crushed ice to chill.
  2. In the second glass, muddle the sugar, water, and bitters together.
  3. Add the rye bourbon whiskey to the sugar mixture and stir well.
  4. Empty the ice from the first glass and rinse the interior with Herbsaint, discarding the excess.
  5. Fill the glass with fresh ice and pour the contents of the second glass over it.
  6. Twist a lemon peel over the drink to release its oils but do not add it to the drink.
