Egg Nog - Cooked

A velvety, custard-style eggnog with rich caramel and vanilla notes, warm nutmeg spice, and a subtle hazelnut sweetness. Pale golden and thick, it pours creamy and luxurious and makes a festive, crowd-pleasing holiday punch. Worth making when you want a nostalgic, dessert-like drink to serve a group.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 1/2 tsp Lemon Juice
  • 6 Egg
  • 4 cups Milk
  • 1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1/8 tsp Nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp Salt
  • 3/4 cup Heavy Cream
  • 2 tblsp Hazelnut Liqueur
  • 1 tblsp Granulated Sugar

Instructions

  1. Combine granulated sugar, some water, and lemon juice in a medium-sized saucepan. Bring to a boil and cook until it turns dark amber, around 5 minutes.
  2. Remove from heat and carefully add the remaining water while stirring.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat together the eggs and milk.
  4. Gradually add the egg and milk mixture to the sugar syrup, stirring continuously.
  5. Cook over medium-low heat until the mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon, approximately 10-12 minutes.
  6. Transfer the mixture into a clean bowl and mix in the vanilla, nutmeg, and salt.
  7. Refrigerate the mixture until chilled.
  8. Before serving, whip the heavy cream, hazelnut liqueur, and additional sugar until soft peaks form.
  9. Pour the chilled eggnog into a serving bowl and gently fold in the whipped cream mixture with a whisk.
