Homemade Southern Comfort

Ripe peach sweetness and warm bourbon spice combine into a golden, slightly syrupy liqueur with a bright lemon-peel lift. It drinks smooth and fruity with noticeable boozy warmth, looking amber and viscous. Worth making for a seasonal, batch-friendly house liqueur that works neat, over ice, or as a cocktail/cooking ingredient.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lb Peach
  • 1 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 4 strips Lemon Zest
  • 2 cups Bourbon

Instructions

  1. Peel, pit, and slice the peaches, then place the slices into a saucepan.
  2. Combine the peaches with the sugar, stirring gently over low heat until the sugar fully dissolves and the peaches release their juices.
  3. Transfer the peach mixture into an aging container, incorporating the lemon peels and bourbon by stirring until well mixed.
  4. Seal the container and store it in a cool, dark place (or refrigerate if necessary) for a week, remembering to stir occasionally.
  5. After the week has passed, strain the mixture, pressing the liquid out of the peaches with the back of a wooden spoon, and filter it to ensure clarity.
  6. Enjoy it for cooking right away, but allow it to age another month for optimal drinking.
