Negus

Rich and warming, Negus delivers ripe port and red-wine fruit balanced by a spoon of sugar and a splash of brandy, with bright lemon cutting through the sweetness and a dusting of nutmeg on the nose. It pours a deep ruby-red and is served hot in a goblet, with a faintly softened sparkle from the Burgundy and an inviting spiced aroma. A cozy, easy-to-make drink that works well as a small-batch punch for winter evenings or after-dinner sipping.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz LBV Port
  • 1 oz Claret Wine
  • 1 oz Sparkling Red Burgundy Wine
  • 1 tsp Brandy
  • 2 oz Water
  • 1 tsp Granulated Sugar

Instructions

  1. Slice the lemon into thin rings.
  2. In a large pot, combine LBV port, claret, sparkling Burgundy wine, brandy, water, and a heaped teaspoon of sugar.
  3. Add the lemon rings to the pot.
  4. Gently heat the mixture over low heat until hot but not boiling.
  5. Stir occasionally to ensure the sugar dissolves completely.
  6. Strain the mixture into a heat-proof wine goblet.
  7. Garnish with a pinch of nutmeg on top before serving.
